Interview with Kylee of Kylee's Keepsakes

Interview with Kylee of Kylee's Keepsakes

by Canadian Originals August 11, 2017

Kylee is a talented and versatile maker from Brantford, ON. Even though she’s only 25, she’s already been an entrepreneur for two years and a mom for almost three. Together with her partner Adam she is raising an amazing 2.5 year old little boy who is her inspiration every day. Kylee calls little Liam her “heart warrior”, and he truly is. After being born with a congenital heart defect, he has been through extended hospital stays and extensive surgeries, but looking at his smiling, happy little face you’d never know it.

While
crafts have always been a hobby of hers, Kylee launched her business after posting online pictures of a quilt she made for Liam out of all his baby clothes. The requests for a similar quilt started coming in from people who saw it and loved it. As Kylee soon noticed, there are always Facebook posts from people looking for someone to make something custom for them. The timing was perfect for Kylee who was looking for a way to work from home so she could care for her son and have a flexible schedule that could accommodate his medical needs. “I love taking on new challenges and doing new things”, Kylee says, “so this was perfect for me. So my business was born. “

With Adam’s help, she started to expand into wood home décor, creating custom signs for weddings, nurseries, cottages – if you have an idea, Kylee can bring it to life. Kylee is helping us design a line of exclusive home decor items for our soon to open online store - sign up for our newsletter and be the first to know when you can start ordering one of a kind items.

With only word of mouth testimonials and no advertising, it took Kylee less than a year to get a Facebook group going, which is how she came to our attention as well. She already has a booth at a local market, and plans to attend more craft shows as time permits. Speaking of time, Kylee says “My biggest daily challenge is TIME..
there is never enough in a day that’s for sure.
From dealing with a busy toddler, to maintaining the house , and finding time to work on my orders, it somewhat seems impossible some days, but somehow it gets done.”

For the busy young mompreneur, there is always a new challenge around the corner. “What I’ve learned about myself as an artist is to not limit yourself to a certain thing.
I’ve found some amazing projects that I never thought I could do, but once I tried and experimented I found that they turned out great in the end.” One of her most popular items are the wooden letters, a perennial favorite for nurseries and soon available in our online store. While some people have particular requests, most customers are happy to leave the design up to Kylee who creates it based on a generic requests such as “superheroes” or “princess” theme. Kylee loves these requests because “it pushes my creativity”.

We loved working with Kylee and seeing her enthusiasm for the Canadian Originals box. As she does a lot of custom work, this was right up her alley and she enjoyed creating a unique piece for our July box to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. With a thriving business that grows every day, Kylee is considering expanding her workshop and adding new products to her offering. In the meantime, she takes her inspiration from her customers. “Whatever you want made, I can make it.
I live and breathe creating. I don’t think there is a day that goes by that I don’t either have a paintbrush in my hand or am working on a project for someone.
Crafting is in my blood and I am thrilled that my work nowadays is something I love”.

The maker of our lovely maple leaf necklace included in the July box is a married mom of two from Milton, Ontario. After spending years in the recruitment field she was introduced to creating jewelry 9 years ago and it was love at first sight. She began by creating bridal jewelry for herself and friends who were getting married, and it was only natural that she’d start creating jewelry for others. She hopes her designs bring not only joy and beauty, but also help celebrate special days and unique memories.
