The maker of our lovely maple leaf necklace included in the July box is a married mom of two from Milton, Ontario.

Raquel has always been the creative type, starting with art and photography when she was young. Her original career plan was to become a hairdresser and she did that for several years before graduating from college and going into HR.

After spending years in the recruitment field she was introduced to creating jewelry 9 years ago and it was love at first sight. She began by creating bridal jewelry for herself and friends who were getting married, and it was only natural that she’d start creating jewelry for others.

Once she started a family she took a break from jewelry making, but always missed it, so she recently re-launched her business and as she puts it, “I enjoy every moment!”

In addition to her current lineup of necklaces and bracelets, Raquel hopes to work on “mommy and me” bracelets next, or bracelet sets for moms with children who are starting school for the first time or just want to have a matching bracelet to think of one another.

Her best advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is “do what you love to do – we spend so much time at work, so be sure to enjoy what you do. Don’t be afraid to take risks early in life – you have so much time to make up for it later!”

We asked Raquel what’s her biggest daily challenge? Her answer is one that all moms are familiar with: “Time! Time is never on my side. Between family and work, it can be challenging to manage time.” For the same reason, her routine is basically no routine, each day bring new challenges – and new opportunities.

Her favorite part of the process is creating custom pieces for her customers. “I enjoy the challenge that it brings and the opportunity to really create something unique and special to that person”, Raquel says. When we first met her, we discussed creating a custom piece for the July box, and Raquel rose to the occasion with a lovely Y pendant accented with red, white and a maple leaf charm.

We talked a bit about trends and where she sees growth: “Chokers, simple and minimal designs seem to be on trend at the moment. I have also noticed people want customizable pieces as well.” For Canadian Originals customers, the good news is that starting in July, we’ll carry Raquel’s creations in our store. Also, for brides to be who want to customize a design for their wedding day, or want to thank their bridesmaids with a unique gift, we’re planning to offer a limited edition box that can include custom colors to coordinate with their wedding day palette.

When she’s not working, Raquel enjoys spending time with family – particularly her two young children. A favorite activity around her house is dance parties. Between work, a growing family and her jewelry collection, Raquel keeps very busy, and also inspired. She hopes her designs bring not only joy and beauty, but also help celebrate special days and unique memories.
